Entertaining but won't scare the hell out of you (not the horror kind of scare).
The plot is typical - inevitable global cataclysm that will cause the earth's inhabitants' extinction and how this will affect people's lives and attitude towards its fellow human. Some will be selfish in order to survive while others remained selfless to answer the call of duty but if it's for your family, both become an act of love.
No mystery, no twists on why its going to happen, just the planetary alignment that was predicted long ago by the great Mayan Civilization and that's what is disappointing. You'll just get to see HOW the earth's crust will crumble and everything on top of it will get sucked in to the core then later thousand-feet tsunami will drown whatever's left from the destruction. One of the modern Noah's Ark will struggle whether it would survive an impact to Mt. Everest or not and from there a hero emerges, portrayed by John Cusack, who originally caused the delay of the "closing of gates," and that allowed everyone in the movie house to let out big sighs of relief.
The movie ended with the Arks opening its windows for its passenger to see the sun's light after the dark clouds.
If there's anything more to it, I'd say none. The casting is great but even the emotions I could say I've seen them in Independence Day, Poseidon, The Knowing and other disaster or end-of-days movies. It's great entertainment specially if your mom is like mine who loves disaster movies but you'll get disappointed if you're trying to find out the mystery of the Mayan prediction.
